Welcome Summer!

Today is the first day of summer vacation for us and to say that it was raining cats and dogs would not be an understatement. Yes, it is great for the garden, and it is so nice to see the plants blooming so big and succulent, but for a 6-year-old who wants to get outside, it can be a damper. Surprisingly, it turned out to be one of the best days ever. We went out to get the mail and didn't come back in until 5:00! We made use of our nice big porch. sat on the glider and watched the rain come down, which is kinda relaxing. Then we started counting thunderclaps and lightning strikes to see how close the storm was getting. We decided to have lunch outside and ate sandwiches and chocolate-covered raisins. We got out the CD player and danced to Bob Marley (which we discovered Leila loves!). We started our summer art journals and sketched for hours. Leila proudly did 45 pages and I ONLY did 13! Only.

We discovered some good things about drawing are:
1. It exercises your hands.
2. The more you do, the better you get.
3. It is so much fun!
4. It makes you feel good.
5. It is nice to do together.

Then a little later Leila wrote in her journal....Drawing is Magic! Then she added out of nowhere...."Dogs spread the word of Magic." Okay, I know all the mommies say this, but is my daughter profound, or what?

It was just that kinda day, a go-with-the-flow, reggae dance in the rain, draw and talk for hours, kind of a day. A LOVE day (complete with no YELLING)! I think it's going to be a good summer.

  1. It does NOT surprise me that YOUR daughter is so profound and the dog comment made me love her a lot. Because of course she's right. This is one of the many reasons why I wish so hard to be a mother - so many times kids bring that much-needed perspective on things that as adults we so many times overlook.
And I love having a porch when it rains.
